Apr 23, 2020
Our new Physician Focus features Dr. Thomas Myers, Unity Health Network Dermatology. Dr. Myers recently moved his practice to 4275 Steels Pointe, Floor 2, Stow, OH 44224.
- Why did you become a physician?
- It was really the only thing I was interested in. My father was a pharmacist and two of my brothers were doctors, so it seemed natural
- Why did you choose Dermatology?
- Dermatology to me is very different. After 15 years of successful internal medicine practice, I found my practice being more and more limited to primary care issues when I had been trained as, and always was more of, a hospitalist before the term was generated. Dermatology offers lots of thinking, medications and more but also the ability to do some procedural medicine, with limited call obligations, which has become quite important to me after the beating we took as young internists
- What do you provide for patients?
- We provide diagnosis and management of any number or rashes, many of which I never knew existed as a primary care doctor. There are new treatments every year to assist in some really poorly manageable diseases and often have to use treatments “off label” as there is no established treatment for rare conditions or uncommon presentations of common conditions. We, of course, diagnose and treat skin cancers, including the use of Superficial Radiation Therapy for “non-melanoma” skin cancers, avoiding surgery. I am proud to say we remain the only such unit in Ohio. We offer some very unique cosmetic anti-aging treatments with some of the newest laser type options available
- What is your goal for patient care?
- I try very hard to make the treatment match up with the patient’s needs, explaining and offering options for their individual issues
- Do you have a favorite patient success story you’d like to share?
- I have a middle-aged man who came to see me for a cyst-like bump on his buttock. I was fortunate enough to biopsy it, finding a very unusual presentation of a rare but very lethal skin cancer. He has been very dynamic in his care, finding treatment at the University of Michigan (few places have experience with this) and hopefully is becoming a huge success story!
- What are some of your interests outside of medicine?
- Golf, by far
- How have you been spending extra time at home recently?
- I’ve been binge watching TV and hitting golf balls into a net
- Where is your favorite vacation destination?
- Lake Tahoe, Nevada
